Interactive Instructional Technologies in Action: Interwrite SchoolPad and Turning Point’s Student Response System

Time: 2:25 - 3:10
Location: Room 104
Presenters: Anne Behler, Reference Librarian
Beth Roberts, Earth Sciences Librarian
Emily Rimland, Reference Librarian

College students today have been raised in technology-rich environments and have become accustomed to Web 2.0 technologies which have created greater expectations for interactivity and participation in the classroom. To increase student engagement and the potential for interactive learning in library instruction sessions, we will demonstrate the use of two new technologies. Using an InterWrite SchoolPad and a student response system made by Turning Point technologies, we will show ways to use them to encourage interactivity and active learning. We will also allow the audience the opportunity to test the technology in the course of the presentation. With Interwrite SchoolPad, students can actually interact with the presentation from their seats. The technology enables students in the class to stay on task because they are engaged with the process and learning from each other. A demonstration of a classroom scenario will assist the audience in envisioning the effective use of these products. The student response system allows the instructor to gauge student knowledge and interest in the material as a pretest or as a pre-assessment, as well as review concepts at the end of class.
