On Friday, March 25, those registered for the Symposium are invited to attend the free “Pre-Symposium Workshop: Transmedia and Education.” The workshop will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in 508 Rider Building, University Park.
In this workshop, participants will explore transmedia–how ideas, stories, messages flow across media platforms–by developing, designing, and implementing a cross-media experience.
In a world where media content flows across the maximum media channels, how do we educate students to navigate this space critically and meaningfully? How do transmedia skills (the ability to scope out and evaluate content from a range of different media sources) differ from multimedia skills (the ability to synthesize various media elements into one coherent composition)? Participants will collaborate to create and weave together videos, podcasts, and other web 2.0 technologies to experiment with transmedia design. People from all academic fields are encouraged to attend; no technological expertise is needed and there are no prerequisites. Participants will primarily focus on the creative process behind this type of approach, with a mixture of new and old Media Commons services and equipment incorporated into the workshop. This will be a fun, fast-paced, and team-oriented session.
